JUNIOR FAIR YOUTH NEWS
Time is passing right by and summer is just a few weeks away. We have changed a few things this year to help insure that all youth have completed their paperwork and have fulfilled their meeting requirements for Junior Fair participation. Please read the following notices and reminders of upcoming events.

QUALITY ASSURANCE MAKE-UP DATES:
Youth planning to exhibit Market Livestock at the 2009 Junior Fair and at least one parent/guardian must attend or have participated in a Quality Assurance program to earn their certificate. Make-up dates for Quality Assurance are listed as follows: June 16, 2009, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. or July 12, 2009, 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Mill Creek Metorparks Farm. If you have not attended, please call Kim Moff to RSVP at 330-547-6633. Youth still needing to attend should receive a post card in this mailing or a special email notice as a notification. 
 
FINAL MAKE-UP SESSION FOR 2009 EQUINE SAFETY: The final Make-Up Session for Equine Safety will be held July 12, 2009 at the Mill Creek Park Educational Farm, 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. Youth planning to exhibit equine and/or parent must attend and sign in at this session to receive credit. The Basic Equine Safety & Horse Ethics Session will be included in this session for first year youth who have never attended an equine session.   .If you have not attended, please call Kim Moff to RSVP at 330-547-6633. Youth still needing to attend should receive a post card in this mailing or a special email notice as a notification. 
 
JUNIOR FAIR ENTRY FORMS: Youth planning to exhibit livestock at the 2009 Junior Fair must complete an entry form to confirm exhibition in the 2009 Junior Fair Show. Entry forms will be available through your club advisor, at the Canfield Fair Office, and on the Junior Fair Web-Site. Entry forms must be completed & returned by the following dates.

June 16, 2009; 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. - MARKET LIVESTOCK SKILLATHON – NO MAKE-UP DATEMill Creek Metroparks Farm. Includes Market Beef, Feeders, Swine, & Lambs. Deerfield Farms has provided a shoulder bag for all youth participating.  
 
July 9, 2009 - MARKET LIVESTOCK ICE CREAM SOCIALYouth planning to exhibit Market Livestock are expected to attend the Ice Cream Social to be held at the Mill Creek Metroparks Farm from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. ENTRY SHEETS & BUYERS LISTS ARE DUE.  Committees will discuss final Junior Fair information. An Ice Cream Social will follow the meeting.
 
SMALL & EXOTIC INTERVIEW JUDGING - MANDATORY: Youth planning to exhibit Small & Exotic Animals at the Canfield Fair should plan to attend the Small & Exotic Animal Interview Judging at the Mill Creek Metroparks Farm.
Ø     Rabbits will be held on Saturday, July 11, 9:00 – 1:00
Ø     Dog Graduation, which will be held at Youngstown All Breed on Saturday, July 11, beginning at 9:00 a.m. will be counted as Interview Judging. Dog Care and remaining members taking dogs may attend the Interview Judging held on Sunday. 
Ø     Pocket Pets, Llamas, Goats, and Poultry members should attend Sunday, July 12, from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Youth unable to attend should contact a member of the committee.
 
MANDATORY LIVESTOCK MEETINGS: Please remember that each committee has required meetings each youth must attend for Junior Fair exhibition. These requirements were listed in your guidelines. Please refer to the Junior Fair Advisory Committee web-site to find the calendar. All updates and changes are posted as soon as they are available. Check this site weekly. If you have a concern about your meeting attendance, please contact a committee member immediately. If your requirements are not met, you will not be permitted to exhibit. Do not wait until the last minute.
 
MAHONING COUNTY JUNIOR FAIR OUTSTANDING YOUTH AWARD: Applications are now available at the Canfield Fair Office for the Outstanding Youth Award. Youth may apply to represent their respective Junior Fair youth organization during Youth Day at the Canfield Fair. Two representatives will be selected for each youth organization. Applications are due by Monday, June 29 to the Canfield Fair Office. Youth must be 15 years of age or older to apply.
 
OUTSTANDING YOUTH & SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION CLINIC: The Junior Fair Advisory Committee will be offering a clinic to assist youth with the skills in completing various applications. The clinic will be held Monday, June 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Mill Creek Metroparks Farm. Bring your laptop. RSVP to Kim Moff at 330-547-6633.

DARREL BACON JUNIOR FAIR BOARD SCHOLARSHIP: Youth who have participated on Junior Fair Board and plan to continue their education beyond high school and/or are currently continuing their education may wish to apply for the Darrel Bacon Scholarship. Applications are available at the Canfield Fair Office.
 
JIM BAER SCHOLARSHIP:   Youth who have participated in Market Livestock projects, and are planning to further their education beyond high school; may wish to apply for the Jim Baer Scholarship. Applications are available at the Canfield Fair Office.
 
FYI: 2009 Saddle Horse Show & Guideline Books are available for sale for $5.00 at the Mahoning County Extension Office, and at the first few Saddle Horse Shows. Equine Safety Books are available at the Mahoning County Extension Office.
 
JUNIOR FAIR SALE T-SHIRTS: Please be reminded that all youth participating in the Market Livestock Sale will be provided with a T-shirt compliments of Witmer’s Feed & Grain to be worn in all Market classes. Please check with the youth in your club taking Market Livestock projects and remind them to send in their order. Extra shirts can be ordered, and must be paid for upon the placing of the order. Forms are available on the web-site, at public meetings, or call Kim Moff at 330-547-6633 with size. 
 
EQUINE SAFETY T-SHIRTS FOR PARTICIPATIONAll youth who have attended the Equine Safety Program will receive one t-shirt compliments of Agland Co-op. An extra T-shirt can be purchased for $10.00 if youth has attended the safety program. 
 
JUNIOR FAIR BOOKS: Junior Fair Books are available and will be available for pick up at the upcoming county events. They are also available at the Canfield Fair Office. Please remember only one per family.
 
AG CAMP: Ag Camp will be held at the Mill Creek Metroparks Farm. Come learn about where your food comes from & have fun with agriculture. Youth in grades K-3 can enjoy a 2 day camp: What’s In Your Alphabet Soup on July 27 & 28; and grades 4-6 a 1 day camp on Friday, July 31: On Top of Spaghetti Found Down on the Farm. The Ag Camp volunteers send a BIG Thank you to Witmer’s Feed & Grain and Agland Coop for their continued support, and Mill Creek Metroparks for providing the facility & support from their educational staff. If you or a friend would like to attend, or help with Ag Camp as a counselor or volunteer, please return the enclosed registration form.
